KANNFINCH undertook this major refurbishment project from concept design right through to completion. The high proﬁle but poorly planned original building, constructed in the mid 1960’s, contained a hotel and street level retail. Our objective was to adapt and reuse the building in ways that would contribute to the revitalization of Double Bay. The new mixed use development has 9,000m2 of gross ﬂoor area including 28 apartments, a large rooftop garden for residents, 20 retail outlets, 137 parking spaces and a community meeting room.
On the street level, a new retail arcade entry has been built, and additional retail outlets have replaced the garbage collection area facing the rear lane. The central portion of the building houses the car park, screened by folded and perforated panels which are the largest urban design object in Double Bay. On the upper levels, the apartments are designed to offer high amenity, with natural cross ventilation, private outdoor space and open plan living a priority.
